Stainless Steel Bollard FAQs

The Stainless Steel Bollard is available in 101mm, 114mm, 129mm, 139mm, and 154mm Diameters. The larger 129mm, 139mm, and 154mm Diameters will require an additional lead time. There are no physical benefits to choosing a larger diameter bollard as they are all manufactured in 2.5 gauge thickness stainless steel unless requested otherwise. The main reason for choosing a diameter is down to personal preference on the visual outcome.
The Stainless Steel Bollard is available in either Grade of stainless steel. Grade 304 and grade 316 are the two standard grades of stainless steel that are used for all our bollard manufacturing. Grade 304 Stainless Steel is more cost effective and is perfectly adequate for use in most external environments in the UK. Grade 316 Stainless Steel is superior to grade 304, due to being able to handle extreme exposure to corrosive saline elements, therefore Grade 316 Stainless Steel should be chosen for UK coastal locations. It is worth noting that both grades are identical in appearance and will equally tarnish if they are not regularly maintained.
The Stainless Steel Bollard is available in 3 different top cap designs. The most popular choice is the semi-domed top cap, especially for highstreets, as it is considered the most aesthetically pleasing and it allows for water run off. The Mitred top is considered a liability in busy locations for possibly causing injuries however it also allows for water run off. The Flat top can be a target for litter, particularly drinks cartons and bottles which is unsightly and may require additional cleaning. However the top caps are chosen by personal preference of the buyer and can be selected to match existing bollards.
The Stainless Steel Bollard has a standard height of 1200mm. We recommend digging a hole to a depth of 400mm, fill the first 100mm with Type 1 MOT Crushed Concrete (approved for use by the Ministry of Transport). Then fill the rest with concrete and install the bollard with the spigots down into the concrete to ensure it cannot be removed. Leave to set.
Simply bolt down the Surface Mounted Stainless Steel Bollard to a secure foundation, typically concrete. The Bollard can be secured to slab paving, depending on the thickness of the slab, we recommend a minimum of 80mm thickness. It is not recommended that you mount on block paving due to the limited width. Installing onto grass would require a concrete block to be first installed. It is not possible to install onto Tarmac.
The Removable Stainless Steel bollard has to be installed into the ground. We recommend digging a hole to a depth of 400mm, fill the first 100mm with Type 1 MOT Crushed Concrete (approved for use by the Ministry of Transport). Then fill the rest with concrete and install the bollard case into the concrete to ensure it cannot be removed. Leave to set.
Coloured Hazard Banding increases visibility, particularly at night, in low light or where there is no street lighting. Hazard Banding is only advised if the bollard is being installed in a location that will assist with directing traffic or reduce the chances of vehicular collisions – especially cars reversing on car parks. As standard we sell the red, white or yellow hazard banding in either a single or double banding. There is no significance in the choice of colours.
The Stainless Steel Bollard will not rust. It will however tarnish and have a ‘tea stain’ effect on the surface after a period of time. It is easily removed by simply cleaning with warm water.
Yes the bollard will need to be replaced after a car incident has occurred to ensure it is adequately performing and to prevent further damage. If you require a more secure bollard that will handle impact better, look at the reinforced stainless steel bollard.
The Stainless Steel Bollard is made from a single stainless steel sheet that is machine rolled into a tube. The top cap and two spigots are welded to it. The bollard is then brush polished with a grit belt or wheel to create the standard Brushed Satin Finish.
The Stainless Steel Bollard weighs 7 kilograms equivalent to a 5-month old baby or a bowling ball. A single bollard is acceptable to be carried alone, multiple units will require a pallet and forklift for transport.
There are many locations where the Stainless Steel Bollard can be installed to provide protection to both people and buildings. A prime location is high footfall and car traffic areas such as the divide between car parking spaces and pedestrian walkways, this can be at shopping centres, town centres, and even for independent shops with private car parks. Entrances and exits to places by vehicle, particularly narrow spaces with walls or paths nearby. Other locations include fuel stations, pub and restaurant private car parks, storefronts, and even near bus stops.
The Stainless Steel Bollard has a guaranteed warranty for 1 year however it should last for a significantly longer period depending on location, how often it is cleaned and whether it has been physically damaged or vandalised.
